On model checking data-independent systems with arrays without reset
A system is data-independent with respect to a data type X iff the operations
it can perform on values of type X are restricted to just equality testing. The
system may also store, input and output values of type X. We study model
checking of systems which are data-independent with respect to two distinct
type variables X and Y, and may in addition use arrays with indices from X and
values from Y . Our main interest is the following parameterised model-checking
problem: whether a given program satisfies a given temporal-logic formula for
all non-empty nite instances of X and Y . Initially, we consider instead the
abstraction where X and Y are infinite and where partial functions with finite
domains are used to model arrays. Using a translation to data-independent
systems without arrays, we show that the u-calculus model-checking problem is
decidable for these systems. From this result, we can deduce properties of all
systems with finite instances of X and Y . We show that there is a procedure
for the above parameterised model-checking problem of the universal fragment of
the u-calculus, such that it always terminates but may give false negatives. We
also deduce that the parameterised model-checking problem of the universal
disjunction-free fragment of the u-calculus is decidable. Practical motivations
for model checking data-independent systems with arrays include verification of
memory and cache systems, where X is the type of memory addresses, and Y the
type of storable values. As an example we verify a fault-tolerant memory
interface over a set of unreliable memories.Comment: Appeared in Theory and Practice of Logic Programming, vol. 4, no.

Dental Hygiene and Dental Assistant Students\u27 Simulated DVI Radiographic Match Accuracy: A Pilot Study
Purpose Allied dental health care professionals have served on disaster victim identification (DVI) teams; however, the literature is void of statistical measures regarding transferable skills and disaster preparedness. The purpose of this study was to assess second year dental hygiene and dental assistant studentsâ match accuracy for simulated DVI radiographs and compare the match accuracy between the student groups. Methods Five patient cases were chosen at random to retrospectively collect sets of digital bitewing radiographs from two time periods. The five retrospectively selected sets of images served as simulated antemortem (AM) and postmortem (PM) radiographs. A convenience sample of second year dental hygiene and dental assistant students from two institutions (n=48) were invited to participate in this IRB-exempt descriptive observational study. The previously selected AM and PM images were randomly mismatched, and participants were asked to visually compare the image sets and indicate the matches using a drag and drop feature in an electronic survey instrument. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data; the significance level was set at Îą=0.05. Results A total of 41 dental hygiene and dental assistant students agreed to participate for a response rate of 85.4%. Eighty-five percent of the participants accurately matched five out of five sets while the remaining 15% accurately matched three out of five sets. A one-sample binomial proportion test revealed that 80% of the participants were able to match at least four out of five sets (p\u3c0.001). Dental hygiene students demonstrated increased matching performance as compared to dental assisting students (p=0.013). Conclusion Both dental hygiene and dental assistant students demonstrated transferable DVI skills to accurately match simulated AM and PM radiographs. Future research is needed in a larger sample to develop and assess best practices of DVI training to build on existing skills for allied dental health care professionals
Anisotropy in the Cosmic Microwave Background at Degree Angular Scales: Python V Results
Observations of the microwave sky using the Python telescope in its fifth
season of operation at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station in Antarctica are
presented. The system consists of a 0.75 m off-axis telescope instrumented with
a HEMT amplifier-based radiometer having continuum sensitivity from 37-45 GHz
in two frequency bands. With a 0.91 deg x 1.02 deg beam the instrument fully
sampled 598 deg^2 of sky, including fields measured during the previous four
seasons of Python observations. Interpreting the observed fluctuations as
anisotropy in the cosmic microwave background, we place constraints on the
angular power spectrum of fluctuations in eight multipole bands up to l ~ 260.
The observed spectrum is consistent with both the COBE experiment and previous
Python results. There is no significant contamination from known foregrounds.
The results show a discernible rise in the angular power spectrum from large (l
~ 40) to small (l ~ 200) angular scales. The shape of the observed power
spectrum is not a simple linear rise but has a sharply increasing slope
starting at l ~ 150.Comment: 5 page
An MPEG-7 scheme for semantic content modelling and filtering of digital video
Abstract Part 5 of the MPEG-7 standard specifies Multimedia Description Schemes (MDS); that is, the format multimedia content models should conform to in order to ensure interoperability across multiple platforms and applications. However, the standard does not specify how the content or the associated model may be filtered. This paper proposes an MPEG-7 scheme which can be deployed for digital video content modelling and filtering. The proposed scheme, COSMOS-7, produces rich and multi-faceted semantic content models and supports a content-based filtering approach that only analyses content relating directly to the preferred content requirements of the user. We present details of the scheme, front-end systems used for content modelling and filtering and experiences with a number of users
IL-33 promotes the egress of group 2 innate lymphoid cells from the bone marrow
Group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) are effector cells within the mucosa and key participants in type 2 immune responses in the context of allergic inflammation and infection. ILC2s develop in the bone marrow from common lymphoid progenitor cells, but little is known about how ILC2s egress from the bone marrow for hematogenous trafficking. In this study, we identified a critical role for IL-33, a hallmark peripheral ILC2-activating cytokine, in promoting the egress of ILC2 lineage cells from the bone marrow. Mice lacking IL-33 signaling had normal development of ILC2s but retained significantly more ILC2 progenitors in the bone marrow via augmented expression of CXCR4. Intravenous injection of IL-33 or pulmonary fungal allergen challenge mobilized ILC2 progenitors to exit the bone marrow. Finally, IL-33 enhanced ILC2 trafficking to the lungs in a parabiosis mouse model of tissue disruption and repopulation. Collectively, these data demonstrate that IL-33 plays a critical role in promoting ILC2 egress from the bone marrow
High resolution CMB power spectrum from the complete ACBAR data set
In this paper, we present results from the complete set of cosmic microwave
background (CMB) radiation temperature anisotropy observations made with the
Arcminute Cosmology Bolometer Array Receiver (ACBAR) operating at 150 GHz. We
include new data from the final 2005 observing season, expanding the number of
detector-hours by 210% and the sky coverage by 490% over that used for the
previous ACBAR release. As a result, the band-power uncertainties have been
reduced by more than a factor of two on angular scales encompassing the third
to fifth acoustic peaks as well as the damping tail of the CMB power spectrum.
The calibration uncertainty has been reduced from 6% to 2.1% in temperature
through a direct comparison of the CMB anisotropy measured by ACBAR with that
of the dipole-calibrated WMAP5 experiment. The measured power spectrum is
consistent with a spatially flat, LambdaCDM cosmological model. We include the
effects of weak lensing in the power spectrum model computations and find that
this significantly improves the fits of the models to the combined ACBAR+WMAP5
power spectrum. The preferred strength of the lensing is consistent with
theoretical expectations. On fine angular scales, there is weak evidence (1.1
sigma) for excess power above the level expected from primary anisotropies. We
expect any excess power to be dominated by the combination of emission from
dusty protogalaxies and the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (SZE). However, the
excess observed by ACBAR is significantly smaller than the excess power at ell
> 2000 reported by the CBI experiment operating at 30 GHz. Therefore, while it
is unlikely that the CBI excess has a primordial origin; the combined ACBAR and
CBI results are consistent with the source of the CBI excess being either the
SZE or radio source contamination.Comment: Submitted to ApJ; Changed to apply a WMAP5-based calibration. The
cosmological parameter estimation has been updated to include WMAP

Small Wind Turbine Testing and Applications Development
Small wind turbines offer a promising alternative for many remote electrical uses where there is a good wind resource. The National Wind Technology Center (NWTC) of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory helps further the role that small turbines can play in supplying remote power needs. The NWTC tests and develops new applications for small turbines. The NWTC also develops components used in conjunction with wind turbines for various applications. This paper describes wind energy research at the NWTC for applications including battery charging stations, water desalination/purification, and health clinics. Development of data acquisition systems and tests on small turbines are also described

The pseudo McMillan degree of implicit transfer functions of RLC networks
We study the structure of a given RLC network without sources. Since the McMillan degree of the implicit transfer function is not a suitable measure of complexity of the network, we introduce the pseudo McMillan degree to overcome these shortcomings.Using modified nodal analysis models, which are linked directly to the natural network topology, we shaw that the pseudo-McMillan degree equals the sum of the number of capacitors and inductors minus the number of fundamental loops of capacitors and fundamental cutsets of inductors; this is the number of independent dynamic elements in the network. Exploiting this representation we derive a minimal realization of the given RLC network, that is one where the number of independent differential equations equals the pseudo McMillan degree
Respiratory syncytial virus infection activates IL-13âproducing group 2 innate lymphoid cells through thymic stromal lymphopoietin
BACKGROUND:
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a major health care burden with a particularly high worldwide morbidity and mortality rate among infants. Data suggest that severe RSV-associated illness is in part caused by immunopathology associated with a robust type 2 response.
OBJECTIVE:
We sought to determine the capacity of RSV infection to stimulate group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) and the associated mechanism in a murine model.
METHODS:
Wild-type (WT) BALB/c, thymic stromal lymphopoietin receptor (TSLPR) knockout (KO), or WT mice receiving an anti-TSLP neutralizing antibody were infected with the RSV strain 01/2-20. During the first 4 to 6 days of infection, lungs were collected for evaluation of viral load, protein concentration, airway mucus, airway reactivity, or ILC2 numbers. Results were confirmed with 2 additional RSV clinical isolates, 12/11-19 and 12/12-6, with known human pathogenic potential.
RESULTS:
RSV induced a 3-fold increase in the number of IL-13-producing ILC2s at day 4 after infection, with a concurrent increase in total lung IL-13 levels. Both thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) and IL-33 levels were increased 12 hours after infection. TSLPR KO mice did not mount an IL-13-producing ILC2 response to RSV infection. Additionally, neutralization of TSLP significantly attenuated the RSV-induced IL-13-producing ILC2 response. TSLPR KO mice displayed reduced lung IL-13 protein levels, decreased airway mucus and reactivity, attenuated weight loss, and similar viral loads as WT mice. Both 12/11-19 and 12/12-6 similarly induced IL-13-producing ILC2s through a TSLP-dependent mechanism.
CONCLUSION:
These data demonstrate that multiple pathogenic strains of RSV induce IL-13-producing ILC2 proliferation and activation through a TSLP-dependent mechanism in a murine model and suggest the potential therapeutic targeting of TSLP during severe RSV infection
